Bridge Building

For over 15 years, Lewis High School students have participated in the International Bridge Building Competition sponsored by the Illinois Institute of Technology. During this two-stage event, the regional event and the international event students are encouraged to learn the fundamental principals of engineering through the “hands on” construction of bridges.  By participating in the Bridge Building competition students get a sense of what it is to be an engineer, having to design structures to exact specifications then witnessing their creation perform its function during an exhilarating competition. Throughout the bridge building process, students are provided with an academically enriched extracurricular activity and one or two mentors from the Los Angeles Bureau of Public Works.
